USDA Proposes More Healthy Food Funds in Low-Income Aid Program

A temporary increase in benefits for the purchase of fruits and vegetables under a major nutrition assistance program for low-income women, infants and children would become permanent under a proposed agency rule.

The Department of Agriculture announced the change on Thursday as part of a proposed regulation that would also make a wider variety of fruits and vegetables available under the scheme. The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children is one of the largest nutrition programs administered by the USDA, with more than 6 million participants.
