A Look At Qatar Airways’ FIFA World Cup Operations

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is just days away, with the opening match set to take place at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 20. In preparation for the tournament, Qatar Airways, the official sponsor of the World Cup, flew several teams to their respective training locations.

On Sunday, Qatar Airways brought the Qatar national football team home after completing a training camp in Spain.

This will be Qatar’s first time participating in the World Cup, automatically earning a place in the tournament as the host nation. Qatar will kick off the tournament on Sunday in the opening match against Ecuador. The team will later face Senegal and the Netherlands in the group stage.

Qatar Airways also carries the Confederação Brasileira de Futebol (CBF), the Brazilian national team, at the World Cup. On Saturday evening, a Qatar Airways Boeing 777 took off from RIOgaleão – Aeroporto Internacional Tom Jobim in Rio de Janeiro and headed for Turin, Italy. On board were members of the CBF management and three players from the Brazilian team. The remaining players arrived in Turin yesterday and today. After a few days of training in Italy, the Brazilian national team will fly to Qatar.

Gol Linhas Aéreas is the official airline sponsor of the Brazilian Football Federation. Yet, as it is an airline that only operates Boeing 737s, it could not fly the team overseas for the World Cup.

Additional presence in the World Cup

Qatar Airways’ presence at World Cup venues and host cities will be strong. The airline has created the Qatar Airways Skyhouse, located within the FIFA Fan Festival, a venue with many engaging activities. The airline has also set up interactive football-themed experiences and family games in each of the eight stadiums hosting matches.

His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker is excited about the World Cup,

“Qatar Airways, the Official Travel Airline for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, is ready to welcome fans from around the world to the State of Qatar. Football fever is in the air and it’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for. Next week at this time the first whistle of the FIFA World Cup™ will sound, marking the start of a truly extraordinary tournament that will be remembered for a lifetime. On behalf of the Qatar Airways Group, we are delighted to welcome football fans on board and at various key locations around the country. »

In preparation for the world’s most popular sporting event, Qatar Airways has placed FIFA World Cup decals on 120 aircraft, in addition to the three hand-painted World Cup-coloured 777s. The list of special brand aircraft includes 8 B777s, 31 B787s, 21 A320s, 12 A330s and eight A380s.

This year’s tournament is unique for several reasons. Most obviously, the tournament is not taking place during the traditional Northern Hemisphere summer of June and July. Due to the heat in Qatar, it was decided that the tournament would be held in November and December to provide better conditions for teams and spectators. A few stadiums were also built from shipping containers and will be demolished after the tournament.
